FlashPlayer 8 Standalone – Update 1
Originally uploaded by chall3ng3r.

I have got great response from Flash community with my two utilities for Macromedia FP8 Beta, FP8 Standalone and Convert2SWF8.

I received many requests and suggestions for further improvements. Many thanks to people who appreciated my work.

This update includes following features:

  • Ability to adjust height & width of the initial FP window with SWFs specs.
Note: This feature works only with non-compressed SWF files. Disable SWF compression from “Publish Settings” dialogue.
  • Built-in SWF8 converter. When AutoConvert is checked, all SWFs will be first converted to SWF8 before loading into player window. (You’ll love this feature)

  4. i’ve not updatd flashplayer in my VirtualPC machine when i compiled it. but this flashplayer automaticaly uses latest flashplayer activex installed on your pc for internet explorer (not firefox).

when you run this player, you’ll see the full version number of flashplayer your have in the upper right corner. if you see 7.x.x that means you have older player, get the new from:
    http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer8

let me know if you have any further questions.

  6. Hi

I have had horrible problems trying to 1)download Flashplayer 8 and 2) make it work. I took advantage of your FlashPlayer 8 Stand Alone download. It appeared to work ok, all of the appropriate messages came up but, when I try to view streaming videos I simply have a frame – nothing else.

I don’t know how relevant this is but when I go to Control Panel/Install Uninstall I notice that both Shockwave and Flashplayer 8 are blank where normally there would show the prog. size.

I am getting no help from Macromedia and am pretty desperate.

  7. This FlashPlayer that i’ve built is nothing but a wrapper to the orignal FlashPlayer from Adobe. it uses the same FlashPlayer that is installed for you IE as activex.

when you run my FlashPlayer, it’ll show you the version number of the currently installed FlashPlayer in upper right corner. check if its the latest 8.0…

or simple uninstall the player, restart windows, and install latest from Adobe’s website.

    i hope this will help.

  10. When I try to play my Flash files .swf (loaded from Internet)
I see them with other width and height, that I saw in e.g. IE
How to set right height & width?
Your “ability to adjust height & width of the initial FP window with SWFs specs” doesn’t work.
That’s so because SWF file is compressed? Then how to uncompress them, I haven’t sources…
Sorry for my bad English, I’m Russian.

  11. hello, sorry for a bit late reply.

thats right, because the header is a bit changed for commpressed SWF files, thats why my FP8 wrapper is unable to get the height & width of SWF. maybe in my idel time i will fix it, and upload it here.

there are some free tools like flasm which (i guess) can decompress SWFs, search for “flasm”.

  12. After I installed this update, my web browser flash player updated and my OS player reverted to ver. 7. This is frustrating.

  13. hello Ben,

this player is just the wraper to the installed Flash player on your PC. it doesn’t install the Flash player, or downgrade your installed player. it just uses the latest installed Flash player ActiveX control on your PC.

even this wraper works with latest Flash player 9 ;)

just install the latest Flash player for IE from http://www.adobe.com, and this wraper will automatically use the installed player.

  23. Hey, I have been trying to get one friking game to work for and hour and a half.
Please when I open the game all I see is the loading screen and it doesn’t load!!!!

    WTF

    28 May 08 at 12:54 am

  24. Hey,

There can be many issues. Most of the time when you download a Flash game’s SWF from a Flash gaming site, it will not work.

The reason is that the SWF saved by Flash savers is just a loader SWF for the game. And this way its a bit hard for Flash savers to catch the actual game, and an oppotunity for site to force you to goto thier site again to play that game :)

You have to manually look for game’s main SWF in “Temporary Internet Files” folder to save it, and make it work offline.Other way could be HTTP Watch named tool.

    Hope it helps,

  25. i think it worked.

does this flash player work like the adobe flash player 8?

    sam

    30 May 08 at 4:58 am

  26. Hi sam,

Not exactly, it simply uses Flash ActiveX control in a VB6 based application. So, its more like Flash in browser.

So, you only get the latest Flash player for Internet Explorer, and my wrapper will automaticaly use it.

  33. I find flash a pain, its good to see that more and mroe websites are not using it. I think it has its pros but far more cons. I heard the Google can now index it, does anyone know that it is true. As for the player..

    4 Sep 08 at 11:59 am

  34. Yes, Adobe have released some SDK to big search engines to index SWFs.

But not sure if older SWFs will be indexed as well, or just SWF9 with meta data support.

  37. What would be nice is if you added a url bar so we could enter the URL of an online hosted flash game and still play it as standalone without the browser. I wouldn’t know how complicated that would be or if it would take up more resources to run all I know is the browser takes up too much resources for crap I don’t even use when all I want to do is play a flash game.

    my 2 cents.

    30 Nov 08 at 11:08 pm

  38. @fara: The SWF seems to be using AS3, and there’s some error when you’re trying to run it offline.

@Jasmine: Please read the comments closely, there might be answer for you.

@Josh: Yeah, thats a great feature and some other guys also requested it via emailing me. I have done work on it and some other features as well. Will be posting an update soon ;)

  39. Is there a way to turn off the URL bar? I find it annoying to have, especially when I want to watch my swf files offline. Also, I find I can’t open or close files through the shortcut or the player itself. I have to go to the file and choose your player instead. One more thing that’s missing. The ability to pause with Ctrl-Enter or do frame advance with Ctrl and the arrow keys.

  40. Hi chall3ng3r,
Haven’t installed but just what I was looking for. Thanks for the hard work. Question. I hate, HATE internet explorer. Anyway to make this compatible with Mozilla’s flash install? Or do I have to reinstall ie, and ie’s flash player? I’ll do it, as long as I never have to actually access ie again after this is installed. Is this the case?
    Thanks for any direction here.
    Warm regards,

    K

  41. @DigiSim: I worked a little bit on new version of my Flash Player wapper, I will include some nice feature into it. If you have any other suggestions, just post them here.

@Kiriaka: You can download the player, and you don’t have to install/use/update IE. The Flash Player for IE is just the ActiveX control, which can be used in any Windows application when installed.

So, my wrapper application uses it as well :)

See the direct download link for Flash Player for IE in original post above.
